The Strategic Materials Advisory Council supports efforts to reduce and eliminate counterfeit parts from the U.S. defense supply chain. In recent years, counterfeit parts were found in a variety of defense applications including aircraft, ships, and electronics. Faulty counterfeit parts not only represent the theft of intellectual property from defense contractors, but also undermine U.S. national security by making products unreliable or unsafe. Following a report from the Senate Armed Services Committee, significant legislation was passed in the National Defense Authorization Acts for fiscal years and. These provisions mandate reporting requirements and impose regulations to ensure parts are purchased through trusted suppliers. The Strategic Materials Advisory Council supports this effort and will continue to support measures that protect the defense supply chain against counterfeit parts.
