US Advisory Council Warns DoD Not to Stockpile Chinese REEs

Government urged to develop US supply chain for strategic mineral security

US lobbying group the Strategic Materials Advisory Council (SMAC) has cautioned the country’s Department of Defense (DoD) to avoid stockpiling strategic and critical materials from China, labeling the approach a “risky mitigation strategy”.

The US DoD recently completed its biannual “Strategic and Critical Materials Report on Stockpile Requirements,” which recommended stockpiling $120.43m-worth of heavy rare earth elements, for which the country’s sole supply source is China.
